India Cuts Coal Imports, Boosts Self-Reliance

India’s coal imports decreased by 7.9% in FY24- 25, saving $7.93 billion, driven by increased domestic production via initiatives like Commercial Coal Mining and Mission Coking Coal, despite power generation growth.

  • Overall, coal imports fell to 243.62 million tonnes.
  • Power plant blending coal imports declined sharply (41.4%).
  • Domestic coal output grew by a promising 5%.
